SaleBright eyed and bushy tailed, the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour (EMCT) kicked off its annual Australasian journey with its first stop scheduled for the Gippsland town of Sale today, Monday, 2 August 2010.
With the trip to Sale marking the Tour’s first stop, the Cup’s Australasian journey is well and truly underway, continuing the journey to South Australia today, Thursday, 5 August, with a stop in Adelaide.
The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour group woke up bright and early today, Thursday, 6 August, to take its first charter flight to the beautiful surfing and fishing town of Streaky Bay, its first stop on the west coast of South Australia.
Following a good rest the Cup and its entourage boarded another charter flight on Saturday, 7 August, to head to Port Lincoln, home of three-time Melbourne Cup champion mare, Makybe Diva.
The Cup got back on board the charter plane early in the morning and set off for Jamestown, a quaint town in Clare Valley, South Australia, today, Saturday, 8 August.
The Tour was bound for its first stop in New South Wales, jet setting off to Broken Hill on Monday, 9 August, to pay tribute to the mining town’s connections with the Melbourne Cup.
The 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour ventured to its first stop in Queensland today, Thursday, 12 August, to offer the sunny state an opportunity to see the coveted trophy.
Two weeks into the 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour, the golden trophy was due to visit Bendigo today, Monday, 16 August, to pay tribute to the regional city’s contribution to the Australian racing industry.
Following a late night cruising with Sydney’s fashion, business and sporting elite, the Cup returned to its home state for a visit to Geelong today, Wednesday, 18 August.
To pay tribute to the Chirnside family, who won the 1874 Melbourne Cup with Haricot, the Cup visited Werribee today with champions of the turf, Mr Roy Higgins and Mr Jim Johnson.
Following a few days of rest, the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour was bound for Ballarat on Friday, 2 August, for a full day of community based events with Tour Ambassador’s, Mr John Russell, a legendary race caller, and Mr Greg Hall, 1992 Melbourne Cup winning jockey.
Today, the Cup took off on a charter plane bound for Warrnambool with former local turned legendary race caller, Mr John Russell and Mr Midge Didham, 1970 Melbourne Cup winning jockey, to pay tribute to the town’s racing history.
After a brief stop in the red centre of Alice Springs, Northern Territory, the Tour crew braved the tumultuous weather warnings and set off for the outback town of Birdsville, Queensland, destined for the iconic Birdsville Cup.
After a long stormy night, the Cup had to modify its schedule and instead of trekking through the mud and rain to horse stalls and the river, the Cup made an appearance at the centralised Tourist Information Centre to ensure that visitors could see the iconic trophy.
